Cal Rep Boards the Queen Mary
Two icons of the Long Beach cultural scene partner to create a unique arts experience.

Long Beach, CA (June 15, 2009) - California Repertory Company will take up residence in the Royal Theatre aboard the retired luxury liner this fall.   Joanne Gordon, Cal Rep's artistic director, says, "The elegant refined glory of the Queen Mary combined with the vibrant exciting aesthetic of Cal Rep is sure to produce a thrilling synergy and an invigorating theatrical experience for our audiences."
The move to the historic Queen Mary comes after two years in residence at the Long Beach Armory, home to Cal Rep since the company vacated the Edison Theatre in downtown Long Beach.  Although based at the Edison Theatre since 1998, Cal Rep was forced to move as a result of revised seismic retrofitting regulations.  "We are still focused on finding a permanent home in Long Beach, but while we are working toward that goal, the Queen Mary provides a wonderful opportunity to interact with the community in a vital new way," says Gordon.   She continues, "We are especially pleased to be able to present our twentieth anniversary season in such an iconic symbol of the city that has supported us since 1989."

"We are thrilled to be partnering with such a cutting edge artistic group as Cal Rep and look forward to welcoming them on board," said Queen Mary General Manager, Jay Primavera.

Councilmember Suja Lowenthal agrees.  "This is truly an exciting partnership between Cal Rep and the Queen Mary that benefits the entire city", remarked Lowenthal.   She added, "Bringing quality performing arts and entertainment to this historic tourist destination is a great idea and underscores our goal of strengthening the ties between CSULB and our downtown."

California Repertory Company is a professionally-modeled theatre which nurtures artists, engages audiences, and develops exciting, relevant, and thought-provoking work to provide graduate training to the masters of tomorrow.   Cal Rep's twentieth anniversary season opens on Friday, September 25th, at the Royal Theatre aboard the Queen Mary.   Performances will be Tuesday through Saturday at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $17 for seniors and students (with valid ID). For tickets and information please call (562) 985-5526 or visit www.calrep.org.
